“We believe the 4 to 5 days required to notify families of specific injuries and casualties suffered by loved ones on active duty can be reduced.” So says Richard Kaye of the God’s Facebook Christian Social Network (godsfacebook.com).
“Many of the wounded servicemen (particularly those who are ambulatory) have access to Blackberries and laptops but have no connectable electronic address to use. Most are anxious to inform their loved ones that they are now well and safe.”
“The good news”, continued Richard Kaye, “is that our site (godsfacebook.com) can be reached throughout the Mideast. When other sites were ordered closed down by regionalgovernments, we refused to do so. This is why we are now an ideal conduit for our service people to send and receive messages.”
While many observers of the Christian Social Network scene are surprised at the audacity of this bold new addition to their network ranks, others are not. From the very beginning, God’s Facebook has made it perfectly clear that it has a strong parallel agenda of being active in extending the Church’s work beyond the pulpits and glass-stained windows. Recently, it announced that it will be including job listings to help the unemployed. And a week earlier the site confirmed that it will soon be posting missing children notices.
As of this wasn’t enough, no-fee Bible classes are now being offered on Thursday evenings (and usually by renowned theologians) . Yet, here’s the fascinating “topper”, two weeks ago, God’s Facebook invited President Obama and his family to become members. The cost of membership to them and everyone else? Free. No word yet, whether he will accept.
When pressed as to his confidence that God’s Facebook members would do their utmost to have service people and friends spread the word of the connectability of their site to hospitalized troops in Iraq and Afganistan, Richard Kaye said, “I have no doubt they will gladly partake in this important new challenge.” More information at godsfacebook.com.
